POOKIESNACKENBURGER In... HELL BENT (1985) Channel 4 TV UK

Just found an old episode of a 1980's UK comedy music show called "POOKIESNACKENBURGER" on Youtube.
The episode in question is from 1985 and is called "HELL BENT".
It concerns itself with a spoof "Black Metal" band called IRON LUNG who are recording their latest album in a haunted abbey which has been converted into a recording studio, whilst the band try to raise Satan to do their bidding.
The songs are quite amusing, although overall the show isn't as funny as i remembered. I did enjoy the "Wicker Man" styled pub scene though.
The show only ran for one series, with each episode spoofing a different genre of music.
Pookiesnackenburger were a real band who had initially formed as a busking ensemble.
Some of their members were later behind the "Stomp" musical/dance extravaganza.

Howdy folks, sorry it has taken me so long to get around to updating this page.
Sometimes life just insists on getting in the way of the things you intend to do despite your best intentions.
Hope tonight's bumper selection of old US Heavy Metal albums will go some way towards making up for my lengthy lay off here.
We have some truly obscure stuff in tonight's selection, but hidden amongst these there are musicians who went on to make a mark in other outfits, such as a Pre-VINNIE VINCENT INVASION & SLAUGHTER Mark Slaughter fronting X-CURSION, SERPENT'S KNIGHT featuring a young Warrel Dane Pre-SANCTUARY & NEVERMORE, and before he was in CJSS and CHASTAIN, little David T Chastain was guitarist extraordinaire with SPIKE.
We also have ex-VIRGIN STEELE guitarist JACK STARR with his first solo album, "Out Of The Darkness", which features the cream of the early '80's New York Metal scene backing him with the late great RHETT FORRESTER of RIOT singing on all tracks, and former STEELER frontman Ron Keel with the debut album from his eponymously named band, KEEL.
Add to that little lot some great obcurios from the likes of RAT ATTACK, CRYSYS, PROPHECY, VICTIM, RISING POWER, MAX LYNX, TAIST OF IRON, DESIRE, LADY KILLER, WYZARD and PANDEMONIUM and i think you'll find much to enjoy amongst tonight's selection.

Phil Kennemore of YESTERDAY & TODAY/Y & T sadly lost his battle with cancer a few weeks ago, and last week we also lost Henrik Ostergaard of DIRTY LOOKS to causes unknown at this time.
Raise a glass to them for the good times.
Rest In Peace.

RONNIE JAMES DIO : R.I.P.

Wendy Dio, wife/manager of legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW), has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:

"Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.

"Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all.

"We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us.

"Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss.

"Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever."

It was only a month ago that Dio, 67, spoke about his battle with cancer with the Artisan News Service on the "black carpet" of the Revolver Golden Gods Awards, which took place on April 8 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. When asked about how he had been feeling since he was diagnosed with the disease late last year, Dio said, "Well, I feel good and bad at times. It's a long process. Chemotherapy is a... I never realized what a difficult thing it was to go through. It's a real cumulative effect — the more you have, the more it piles up on top and it takes longer and longer to get over it. I find it very difficult to eat. I don't like to eat anyway, so I guess that's OK. But I know I have to. But this makes it very, very hard. But if you're determined to beat it, then you have to go with what you believe is going to beat it for you, and in this case it's that. I go to a great hospital in Houston called M.D. Anderson, which I think is the best hospital in the world, I have the best doctor in the world, Dr. Ajani, who I really trust and I really believe in, so I think I've done all the right things. It makes me feel positive about my life and positive that there is a lot more of it to live."

Earlier this month, HEAVEN & HELL canceled its summer tour plans in Europe due to Dio's treatment for stomach cancer. The band said in a statement that Dio wasn't "well enough to tour this summer. We hope that everyone understands and want to thank fans and industry colleagues for their continuing support at this time."

Ronnie James Dio had performed with ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, and his own band DIO. Other musical projects included the collective fundraiser "Hear 'n Aid". He is widely hailed as one of the most powerful singers in heavy metal, renowned for his consistently powerful voice and for popularizing the "devil's horns" hand gesture in metal culture. He was most recently involved with HEAVEN & HELL, a project which also included former BLACK SABBATH bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice. Their first and only studio album, "The Devil You Know", was released on April 28, 2009.

Howdy folks.
Yup, i'm back again, scarcely a month after the last post at Still Alive & Well with another thrilling selection from Rawk's very own back-in-time basement treasure trove.
Not too many big names amongst tonight's selection, although those of you of a certain age and the connisseurs amongst you will surely recognize monickers like SORCERY (yes, the same band who released "Sinister Soldiers"), FULL MOON, MESSENDGER, HYKSOS and CULPRIT.
Sprinkle in the likes of BAD AXE, BEOWULF, (NOT the Suicidal Tendencies related act), FORTNOX, JOE STEP, BLACK DIAMOND and AMERICADE and what you have here is a pretty good cross section of what was happening in U.S. Metal between the years of 1976 and 1983.

Here we are again, back with part 2 of my themed post on US Metal EP's, Mini LP's & Demos. This time we concentrate on the years 1983 & 1984, classic years for collectors of obscure American steel. Lots of small independent labels springing up, local distros and a groundswell of grassroots underground bands for the fans to get excited about. Most of the material this time is pretty damned obscure, and for the most part has never been reissued. The better known bands are VIXEN, who featured a young Marty Friedman pre-MEGADETH, RICHIE RANNO, formerly guitarist with STARZ & HELLCATS and OBSESSION who had several releases and a strong cult following for their PRIEST styled Metal. The other bands are pretty much unknown to all but the hardest of the hardcore collectors. This shit was hard to find then, never mind now.
Dig in and give your ears a treat, you just might find yourselves some new favourites.

First post for a while over here, sorry for the delay, hope this little lot will make up for it.
This is Part One of a large post which covers US Metal EP's, demos and Mini Lp's.
For a little background, SNOW featured Carlos Cavazo pre-QUIET RIOT, ALIEN featured the late Frank Starr pre-FOUR HORSEMEN, and XCURSION was the first band of Mark Slaughter before his stints in VINNIE VINCENT INVASION and SLAUGHTER. Oh, and MOTLEY CRUE's Nikki Sixx was involved behind the scenes with LEATHER ANGEL, helping with their song arrangements and even their logo.

Howdy people, not been too busy over here lately so i thought i better get my finger out and get some good sounds up here for you. What do you whip out when you want to get people's attention on a Friday night? You go for the best. The hottest band in the land. Or a reasonable approximation of the same. So here's the latest installment in the never ending procession of KISS tribute albums, three various artists collections from the excellent "Larger Than Life" series of releases, and the obscure KISS tribute "Split", featuring two Swedish bands, PARTNERS IN CRIME and FARK, reinterpreting the canon of the grease paint gods.

KISS Tribute Albums Part Two

Another post, and yet more great music at Still Alive & Well. All is right with the world.
This time out we're proud to bring you a stack of tribute albums dedicated to hailing the self-styled "Hottest Band In The World", KISS.
If you go waaay back in the archives, you'll find the first part of this mega post, this is part 2, and there will be a part 3 to appear here some time in the future. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, tonight we bring you 5 distinctly different albums, one full of US bands, one from Japan, and a trio of compilations from three different online KISS sites, Kiss Army On Line, Kiss Army Sweden and the Kiss Detention Hall. Some of the versions are pretty true to the originals in sound and spirit, others rearrange the songs to the point where you'll find it hard to recognize them. Some favour the classics, some more obscure hard core fan favourites. All are well worth hearing.
So dig in Kiss army foot soldiers, and enjoy this selection.

Hi again, and a Happy New Year to you all.
This time around we'll be delving into the past to dredge up a whole bunch of under appreciated and seldom seen European and Scandinavian albums and Mini LPs, from back in the days when the Cold War was in full swing and unemployment was at it's highest.
The more things change the more they stay the same eh?
The beautiful girl in the Swedish bikini is gratuitous yes, but it does serve notice that the majority of tonight's featured bands came from that very country, with French, Finnish and Danish acts making up the remainder.
So, in the yellow & blue corner, from Sweden, we have GLORY BELLS BAND, AXE WITCH, GOTHAM CITY and BURN. From France, SHAKIN' STREET. From Denmark, ANGER. And from Finland, RIFF RAFF. All of these records were released between 1981 and 1983, a fertile period for Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, i think you'll find plenty to enjoy amongst tonight's selection.

Hello again, hope you all managed to squeeze as much fun as possible out of your Christmases, and now that the big day is over i suspect you'll be looking for something to chase away the winter blues. Well folks, i'm glad to oblige with seven shiny black circles of Swedish steel from days of yore, and one from Finland too!
This time around, we span the years 1984 - 1986 to conclude our collection of Scandinavian and European 7"s, EPs and demos.
Tonight's "big" names are OZ, AXEWITCH and HEAVY LOAD, but make sure you take the time to get acquainted with MANINNYA BLADE, WARNING, HELS, MANIAC, FAITH and GOTHAM CITY too, just because you may be unfamiliar with them is no reason not to take the opportunity to check them all out.
I tell you this, i'm prepared to bet that you'll be glad you did!
Although this is the end of this particular musical excursion for the moment, fear not, because next time out we'll be delving into more vintage European and Scandinavian Heavy Metal, but we'll be focusing on the full length albums and Mini LPs from that scene.

Okay, we're back again with a new set of uploads taking in a slightly different musical area. This time we're heading North, South and East in search of unsung Metal treasures from Scandinavia & Europe.
We'll stick to the 7"s and EPs for now, taking in the years 1979 to 1982 this time 'round. We've got music from Sweden & Norway in this post, but in the next installments we'll be taking in sounds from Holland, Finland and Italy alongside our Scandinavian brethren. Really, the chances are that you won't know any of the bands featured tonight unless you're a rabid collector or a Swede, but don't let this music's obscurity put you off checking it out. At the same time as the UK's Metallic renaissance was taking place, Sweden was undergoing a grass roots resurgence in the form, albeit on a smaller scale. Here we are again with part two of the great NWOBHM LPs post, this time spanning the years 1981 - 1983. The better known bands featured here would probably be Liverpool's SPIDER, BRONZ (who featured NIGHTWING & future GTR vocalist MAX BACON) and ALKATRAZZ, but please note this is the AOR influenced UK group, not the Graham Bonnet/Yngwie/Vai band.
Lesser known names include the likes of CHINATOWN and the excellent Scottish band CHASAR, who i was lucky enough to see live once when i was just a lad. For real obscurists, check out the three compilation albums, all originally released by Ebony Records, lots of rare bands make their only vinyl appearances on these here compilations, and a few who went on to bigger & better things too. NWOBHM LPs Pt 1 (1979-1981)

A lot of people get hung up on the NWOBHM "sound", the galloping rhythm section, the riffing/duelling/harmonizing guitars, the budget rock god with the mike wailing like a Poundland Percy Plant. I recognise the affection for that style, but i feel an awful lot of worthwhile music from that era gets overlooked by people in an effort to turn up the lost bands who could have been the "new Maiden", those who fit the narrow NWOBHM definition. One of the NWOBHM movement's strengths to me was the sheer variety of music that was produced on this tiny island at that time which still fitted under the "NWOBHM" umbrella. Take part 1 of this 3 part mega post for instance, you got bands here which included prog-rock influences, Boogie, AOR, you had some who were coming from a Hard Rock direction, some who kept their Metal undiluted & raw, hell, there's even a Christian band included here! It was a broad church, (terrible pun!), and that's reflected by the music here, i hope you find something here that you'll cherish for life. Happy listening!

Hi people, here we go again with part 4 of our Classic Rock & Hard Rock post. This time out we cover the years 1985-2006 and take in some big names and some lesser known acts too. Also a few of those "familiar faces in unfamiliar places" bands for you to enjoy as well. We've got Matt Sorum's first recording band HAWK from the days before he sat behind the kit for THE CULT, GUNS n ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER, former LUCIFERS FRIEND, URIAH HEEP and REBEL singer JOHN LAWTON fronting ZAR, and ex- STARZ and HELLCATS guitarist RICHIE RANNO with his RICHIE RANNO BAND. ROSE TATTOO men, ANGRY ANDERSON, PETE WELLS and STEVE KING show up in their extra curricular DAMN FINE BAND and CIRCUS OF POWER vocalist ALEX MITCHELL crops up with his solo "Showbiz Al" EP. There's an album of BUDGIE studio rarities including alternate versions, acoustic renditions and re-recordings spanning the years 1971-2006, and a fantastic live album from SUPERSUCKERS, the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world. Yadda, yadda, yadda, new post for ya, blah, blah, is anyone even bothering to read this?, oink, miaow, woof, 'coz the feedback on previous posts has been scant to say the least, scream, shriek, roar, and it's disappointing to a hard working blogger like meself, burp, fart, hiccup.
So (pretty please) let's see some comments.
Part 3 of the Hard Rock/Classic Rock marathon coming your way tonight, lots more good stuff covering the years 1982-1985. "Like what?", you ask?
Like a collection of rare ROSE TATTOO tracks from their glory years, former LUCIFER'S FRIEND/URIAH HEEP singer JOHN LAWTON's post-HEEP band REBEL, ex-STARZ/HELLCATS guitarist RICHIE RANNO gone solo and BLUE OYSTER CULT's BUCK DHARMA gone solo with help from members of the original ALICE COOPER band. How's that for starters? Not convinced? Howzabout DAVID T. CHASTAIN's first band SPIKE, former VIRGIN STEELE guitarist JACK STARR gone solo with help from RIOT's RHETT FORRESTER and members of THE RODS, the debut from former STEELER vocalist RON KEEL's imaginatively named KEEL and three former members of UFO live at the peak of their powers in WAYSTED? More well known musicians in unfamiliar surroundings, such as former THIN LIZZY/future MOTORHEAD guitarist Brian Robertson alongside ex-RAINBOW/future DIO four stringer Jimmy Bain in the underrated WILD HORSES, ex-BLACKJACK/future KISS axeman Bruce Kulick with GOOD RATS, former NITZINGER guitarist Bugs Henderson gone solo, Ross The Boss between his stints in THE DICTATORS & MANOWAR shredding for SHAKIN' STREET, as well as former BUBBLE PUPPY & DEMIAN personnel in SIRIUS. Familiar faces in unfamiliar places. Add to that the excellent, but unreleased at the time, third album from LEGS DIAMOND and we have one hell of a post people. Enjoy it.

NWOBHM EPs Vol 4 : 1984-1986

Well, here we are again with another new post, this time completing (for now) the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal EPs series. A nice balance between one shot bands with their sole releases, and bands who were able to get a few releases under their belts, such as LE GRIFFE, WARRIOR & PERSIAN RISK.
Lots of variety in sound & style, but quality written all the way through like a stick of Blackpool rock.
Also as a cheeky bonus, there's the awesome & inventive IRON MAIDEN vs WAXAUDIO Mashup EP. Put together by some Australian genius/madman, this contains sonic soundclash versions of several Maiden classics colliding with dance, drum'n'bass & banghra beats. A horrifying proposition to purists, but these songs have been put together with such skill, care & humour, that they deserve to be heard. The band themselves have always had a good sense of humour, i'm sure they'd approve. Enjoy.

Hi again, yup, we've got another round of Canadian musical treats for you this evening, this time coming from the Heavier end of the spectrum and covering the years 1982-1999.
There have been some great Canadian Metal bands over the years, ANVIL, RAZOR, EXCITER, VOIVOD, D.B.C., PILEDRIVER, SLAUGHTER etc etc etc. but this selection is a little more obscure. Obscure, but still awesome! The best known name amongst this little lot is probably UNION MADE, which was VOIVOD singer Snake's band during his absence from his main band. They only released a 7" during their lifetime, but we're proud to present their unreleased album here. Lot's to enjoy amongst the others too, from the classic WITCHKILLER Mini LP to the KRAKEN album, it's solid gold all the way. Enjoy!

No-one, that's who!
A lot of these bands are pretty much unknown outside their home country except to connoisseurs of the form, and believe me, that's our loss!
So whilst you can take this opportunity to plug gaps in your GODDO or TORONTO collections, why not check out Greg Godovitz's pre-GODDO band FLUDD too, or excellent Hard Rockers THE HUNT?
You'll be glad you did, and i'll feel like i did something worthwhile if i can turn at least one person onto these great forgotten bands who deserved far better for their musical endeavours.

NWOBHM EPs Vol 3 : 1982-1984

Time for part 3 of the great NWOBHM (That's New Wave Of British Heavy Metal to you and me!) EP post, and there are some real treats to be found amongst this selection.
Now you may only know the legacy of the NWOBHM from the bands who made it out alive & went on to bigger & better things, i'm talking about the likes of IRON MAIDEN, DEF LEPPARD & SAXON, and thanks to METALLICA's patronage maybe you also know of DIAMOND HEAD, but these bands were merely the tip of a huge iceberg. There were literally thousands of bands forming and splitting during this era, and if they got as far as releasing product, chances are it would be a small run independent 7" or EP.
It's amongst these obscure records that the true gems are to be found, it just takes a little digging to unearth these Metallic treasures, but when you hit pay dirt, it's well worth the effort!
So get yer hardhats on, grab a pick axe, a torch and a canary and get ready to get your hands dirty. Welcome to the Still Alive & Well precious Metal mine, go forth & excavate!

Okay, it's time for part 2 of the great NWOBHM EP post, this time spanning the years 1980-1982.
The better known bands include GEDDES AXE, BLEAK HOUSE & TRIARCHY, all great bands for sure, but there are many equally good bands amongst the more obscure names here.
Particularly recommended are AFTER DARK, TURBO & ANTHEM, but to be fair, all of these releases are well worth hearing.

NWOBHM EPs Vol 1 : 1978-1980

The title explains the contents quite nicely i feel, just a shed load of New Wave Of British Heavy Metal EPs, this selection culled from the very dawn of the movement, 1978-1980. As such, this lot will probably sound quite tame to today's young whippersnappers, dating as they do from the pre-Thrash, Black, Death, Speed eras. So sonically this lot share more in common with the titans of '70's Hard Rock & Heavy Metal than what passes for Metal nowadays. JAMESON RAID & GEDDES AXE were the most prolific of the bands featured here, releasing several 7"s & EPs between them. MONEY & 100% PROOF both managed to release full length albums, but the remainder were one shot bands. You'll be surprised at the bands individuality and playing, and for (mainly) independent self-financed recordings now almost 30 years old, the fact that the music holds up so well is testament to the strength & depth of the movements legacy.

So what do i have for you tonight then? How about a selection of demo tapes from the USA, the UK and Scandinavia? Mostly Metallic in content and primarily from the glory daze of the early 1980's. Some of the bands will be names well known to hardened Metal heads, BROCAS HELM, MANILLA ROAD, GRAND MAGUS & JAMESON RAID, for instance. Some are a bit more obscure, one shot NWOBHM bands and cult Scandinavian delights. Whether you're familiar with the bands or not, give 'em a shot, i guarantee there'll be something to set your ears & hearts aflame. Primal and naive for the most part, these are treasures to cherish.

Love it or hate it, despite the "flash-in-the-pan" protestations of the press back then, Punk Rock has stood the test of time.
Here's a dizzying phlegm flecked selection of the great, the good, the bizarre and the arcane drawn mostly from the dawn of punkdom.
Just great 45s, EPs & LPs, mainly American in origin, absolutely and unapologetically defiant in tone, but surprisingly individual and disparate in style.
Whether you're a convert or not, have a rummage through this selection anyway, you might just be surprised at the breadth of music presented here, and hopefully you can find some new old heroes to champion amongst this little lot.

Howdy folks, as of whenever i get my act together, this blog will host the links to the music i've posted around the web over the months & years.
You may be familiar with my posts over time at the likes of New Improved Live & Otherwise Blog, Hardblog, Valhalla, Lagrima Psicodelica, Time Traveller, The Corroseum & Dr Jimmys. If not, you'll find many obscure gems here, styles include : Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Southern Rock, NWOBHM, Classic Rock, Punk etc.
There'll be other styles covered too, just don't expect to find dance music, reggae, hip-hop or singer/songwriter stuff covered, my tastes run more to the harder end of the musical spectrum.
This blog doesn't mark the end of my posting at my other haunts, it's just a place where the curious can find my older posts archived, and hopefully keep the decrepit links live a little while longer.
